Frequently Asked Questions
Everyone starting their volunteering journey with a new organisation has a few questions.
We’ve listed some normal questions below!
Many volunteers have regular shifts each week, either in the mornings or afternoons.
We have a rota for each department, and can offer options for those who are unable to commit to regular slots.
The decision on how many shifts you can do is entirely up to you!
All our volunteers are given comprehensive training.
Training is carried out by:
- shadowing another volunteer who has been doing the role for some time.
- delivery by a member of staff in that department.
We offer regular training sessions in HIV Awareness. These are available for free to all volunteers.
Of course you can!
You aren’t an employee. We appreciate that volunteers often have other commitments and responsibilities to deal with.
If you know in advance that you are going to be away, then the more notice you can give us the better. That way we can find another volunteer to cover your absence.
If ever you encounter any challenges or difficulties in your volunteering role, we always recommend that you speak to your line manager first.
If you are unable to resolve an issue, then please contact the volunteer coordinator. They are available to discuss issues relating to your volunteering role.
For serious issues, we have a grievance procedure. This is available on request.

Sometimes it can be good to have a chat about what to expect before applying to be a volunteer.
If you are interested in volunteering at one of our shops, our staff will be happy to talk with you.
Please bear in mind that experienced volunteers manage our shops in a Supervisor role from time to time. They will be happy to talk with you about their volunteer experience. It is still best to call and arrange a chat with a Manager.
You can call our St. James’s Street shop on 01273 682992 and our London Road Shop on 01273 680264.
