We were delighted to welcome our women's group to the Sussex Beacon to celebrate International Women's Day 2020.
Many of the women participating represent a group which has historically been overlooked in HIV treatment - women!
According to the United Nation's official HIV programme, UNAids, 'Almost 40 years into the response, AIDS (HIV) is still the leading cause of death for women aged between 15 and 49 years. Around 6000 young women aged between 15 and 24 years acquire HIV every week.'
This is a serious challenge for women with HIV. In response the women's group gathered together to create a fabric and mixed media wall hanging for International Women's Day 2020, reflecting the mixed heritages and diverse journeys of those participating.
Symbols of hope, resistance and recovery were in abundance throughout the event. The wall hanging was completed for International Women's Day 2020 and was formally hung in our shared community space.
Our participants shared their opinions on why a collaborative wall hanging was an ideal outlet for their thoughts on International Women's Day 2020.
We've shared their quotes below:
The Beacon women’s group is a brilliant place to meet monthly. It is great to meet women who are living positive lives despite their HIV.
I come to meet other women and have social interaction. The women’s group is a great place to be comfortable, to be yourself. It’s good for my wellbeing to talk to the other women and share about our lives.
Today I enjoyed being with the women sharing a common cause with love. It was nice to just have a relaxed day doing crafts.
The Sussex Beacon provides expert and specialised services for women living with HIV. There is plenty of detailed information at our Women and Families Services page.
