On 31st March 1992, the foundation stone for The Sussex Beacon was laid at our Bevendean Road location, overlooking the beautiful South Downs. This moment marked the beginning of a vital centre for care and support for people living with HIV, born out of an urgent need during the AIDS pandemic of the 1980s and 90s.
At a time when many in the Brighton and Greater Sussex communities faced unimaginable challenges, local residents came together, rallying around this cause with incredible determination. Through fundraising efforts and unwavering community spirit, they brought The Sussex Beacon to life.
Two years later, in 1994, we proudly opened our doors, with HRH The Duchess of Kent presiding over the ceremony. While our purpose has evolved over the years, our commitment to supporting people living with HIV has never wavered. Today, The Sussex Beacon is a place where individuals find the support they need to regain independence and improve their health and wellbeing through both inpatient and community-based services.
Adapting to Changing Needs
As HIV care has transformed, so too has The Sussex Beacon. We now focus on areas like mental health, drug and alcohol detox, ageing with HIV, social health challenges, peer support, and palliative care. Many of the people we help face complex and multifaceted challenges, and our services are designed to meet these needs with compassion and expertise..
While similar services have closed due to funding cuts, we are proud to have continued providing essential care. The demand for our model of support remains strong, and our work is as vital as ever.
A Loved and Respected Part of the Community
Over the years, The Sussex Beacon has become a cherished part of the Sussex community, particularly in Brighton & Hove and the surrounding areas. At events, our team often hears moving stories from people whose friends and loved ones have been touched by our care. These heartfelt anecdotes remind us of the deep impact The Sussex Beacon has had—and continues to have—on so many lives.
